TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT R&D

Innovation is Envirotel 3000's central focus, and R&D is a big part of what we do. We are leaders in the development of specialized inventory protocols and tools, and over the years we have developed automated inventory tools such as a system for monitoring bat populations in hibernacula, a device to capture nocturnal insects, a recording system for anuran calls, a bat call recording device, a cougar detection station and the IchtyoS system.

In addition to inventory tools, we have developed special inventory techniques for particular wildlife species. Our standardized protocols for inventorying snakes, stream salamanders, cougars and bats are examples.

STATION RADAR
Yet another innovation from Envirotel 3000: we now offer radar detection of bird and bat migration corridors. This technology, new in Québec, will yield a better understanding of these species' movements, to avoid positioning tall structures (towers, wind turbines) on their migration routes. It can also be used to locate birds near airports, averting potential collisions with planes.

GEO-METEO-MODULE
Designed for installation in combination with our electronic wildlife inventory systems, the GMM is a stand-alone device that records a number of meteorological parameters including wind speed, precipitation and temperature. These measurements are often essential for the interpretation of inventory data, particularly for inventories in remote regions with no weather station nearby.

SEDCHIRO SYSTEM
The SEDChiro system is a stand-alone, automated bat counter that can be installed at the entrance of mines equipped for use as hibernacula. The system records bat movements, providing important information on the utilization of the hibernacula, including the dates the bats leave the mines in the spring and return in the fall, as well as population numbers and mortality rates. In particular, the SEDChiro system enables us to verify the effectiveness of the measures taken in closing mines. It also allows for long-term monitoring of certain hibernating populations.

I-SWAMP SYSTEM
I-Swamp is a stand-alone, automated system to record the calls of anurans (toads and frogs) during their mating period. Mating periods vary considerably from one anuran species to another, and last only a few weeks. This means that field visits must be coordinated appropriately if these species are to be inventoried based on the identification and quantification of night calls. The I-Swamp system can be installed during the day and left on continuously for several weeks, yielding a much more comprehensive inventory than conventional methods. In particular, inventories can be taken in very remote environments which are often hard to access at night. Moreover, the system considerably increases the number of inventories we can assign to our staff in a year. The data are recorded on memory cards and analyzed later in our offices, rather than being compiled directly in the field as required by the existing approach.

I-BOO SYSTEM
I-Boo is a stand-alone, automated system that emits and records owl calls during their mating period. This system enables us to conduct day or night inventories over long periods, in zones that are often remote, under difficult weather conditions (in February and March). The data are recorded on memory cards and analyzed later in our offices. This system enables us to conduct virtually comprehensive inventories of this avian family in specified areas. The I-Boo system can also be adapted to inventory other types of songbirds.

COUGAR DETECTION STATION
The growing number of observation reports would suggest the cougar is making a comeback in Québec. However, these are stealthy animals scattered over vast territories, making it hard to quantify their presence. To facilitate cougar detection, we developed an approach based on the use of sex pheromones. The principle is simple: cougar are attracted to a post containing a bait that appeals to both sexes. In rubbing against the post to mark their territory, they leave hairs, which are collected to extract the DNA. This inventory method has already confirmed the presence of cougar in Québec and the Maritimes on several occasions. Simply by modifying the bait, the same approach can also be adapted for wolverine and lynx.

PILE-DRIVER
The pile-driver developed by the Envirotel 3000 team is designed to drive posts in wetland environments (to depths of up to 5 meters), without resorting to heavy machinery. For instance, this tool can be used to install a walkway in a marsh, without impairing the integrity of the delicate wetland environment.

LEDTRAP
The Ledtrap is a trap designed for nocturnal insects, based on the insects' attraction to light. The stand-alone, automated system turns on at sunset and off at dawn. The captured insects can be recovered daily or weekly for identification.
