The vast majority of birds fly at very low altitudes.
After a research and development effort lasting more than two years, Envirotel 3000 can now offer its clients radar detection of bird and bat migration corridors. This new detection tool gives a picture of bird and bat movements over large distances, and allows precise measurement of their position, speed, direction and altitude. Moreover, the radar system is mounted on a 4WD vehicle, allowing it to be transported on even the most rugged terrain. The telescopic mast raises the radar system to a height of over 60 feet, above the treetops, for more effective detection.
Based on the information collected with this system, we can precisely map migration routes, day or night, for birds and bats alike, as a function of time of day, season and flight altitude.
This new and unique technology available in Québec has numerous applications, including:
gaining a general understanding of bird and bat movements, to avoid positioning structures such as towers and wind turbines on their migration routes;
tracking bird movements near airports, to avert potential collisions with planes;
determining the impact of projects entailing major landscape modification on migratory activity and territory use by birds and bats during other seasons.
